It was just a matter of time before the floppy disk turned into retro cool.
Although much of recent technology has become obsolete. That doesn't mean that these items can't be brought back to life in another form. Case in point is Nick Gentry's art. The London based artist has turned floppy disks of a gentler computer time into mixed media paintings.
His art uses the disks and old vhs tapes as canvas. Although the canvas is primarily floppy disks, sometimes turning them around so the metal center hub becomes an eye for a portrait, Nick continues the process using traditional methods, acrylic, spray, and brush to incorporate the disks and vhs tapes into the final product. Some of his work is has a strong techno look, as would be expected, but much of it, blends in so well, you have to look before you see what makes up the canvas.
Gentry buys his floppies and vhs tapes, but also fans of his art also donate them though his website, where they're for sale as well. http://www.nickgentry.co.uk/
Considering how quickly technology becomes obsolete and ends up in a landfill, I'd be curious how long before Nick will start using actual hard drives or thumb drives as more as more people start moving to the cloud.
